May 2021
Wednesday 19th – mid-week intermediate ride. On the first official club ride of the year, just two riders went via Pencaitland and past Traprain law to East Linton for a cafe stop, back through Athelstansford and Tranent (47 miles).
Sunday 23rd – the first Sunday rides for 8 months! The fitness group rode through Dalkeith country park and Gorebridge to the Granites, left to Heriot, over Gilston to House of Soutra, then back by Humble, East Saltoun and Fa’side (54 miles). The fitness-plus group went out by Fala to Lauder, then via the Langshaws road to Stow for coffee; back via the Old Coach Road, Heriot and the Granites (70 miles). The intermediates rode through Tranent and Pencaitland to Haddington, then to Smeaton nursery for coffee, back in two groups, one direct from Drem, the other diverted by a traffic accident via North Berwick (50 miles / 56 miles).

Wednesday 26th – mid-week intermediate ride. A small group rode out through Pencaitland, past Glenkinchie distillery, over the ford, and back through Pathhhead and Edgehead (33 miles).
Sunday 30th – a huge turnout meant that the intermediates had to split in two from the off. Both groups rode through Dalkeith Country Park, Newbattle, to the Granites, left to Heriot, over Gilston to the Soutra cafe, back by Humbie, East Saltoun, Tranent, Fa’side (51 miles). The fitness-plus group went through Tynehead, Humbie, Gifford and Stenton to West Barns, back through North Berwick, Haddington, Samuelston and Tranent (75 miles). The fitness riders went up to Cousland then Humbie, back roads to Longyester and Garvald, Stenton, Pitcox and Tyninghame for coffee, home via East Fortune, Athelstaneford, and Port Seton (60 miles).

Wednesday 2nd – mid-week intermediate ride to Humbie via Carberry and Pencaitland, back by Cousland (34 miles).
Sunday 6th – the intermediates rode through Eskbank, Carrington, Temple, Tynehead and Fala Dam to Humbie for coffee, back through Samuelston, Elvingston and Seton Sands (48 miles). The new intermediate-plus group went to Linlithgow via Currie, Ratho and Fauchaldean, back by Queensferry and Cramond (57 miles). The fitness group also went west: via Kirknewton and Mid Calder to Livingston, up Pates Hill, through Addiewell and Bathgate to Beecraigs for coffee; home via Winchburgh, Ratho and Colinton (68 miles). The fitness-plus group rode through the Drum estate, Roslin and Leadburn to Broughton then over Dreva for coffee at Dawyck; back by the Meldons, Gladhouse, Crichton and Cousland (75 miles).

Wednesday 9th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Longniddry and Bolton, back by East Saltoun, Elphinstone and Carberry (37 miles).
Sunday 13th – a scorching day, and the intermediates went up the Shawfair cycle path to Loanhead, then via Penicuik and over the moor to West Linton; back through Lamancha, Gladhouse reservoir, Gorebridge and Edgehead (60 miles). The intermediate-plus group went through Lasswade, Rosewell, Leadburn, Romano Bridge and the Lyne Valley to Peebles, returning by Waterheads, Carrington and Dalkeith (59 miles). The fitness ride went over Edgehead, past Crichton Castle, up to the A7, down the coach road to Stow, over to Lauder, back by Oxton, Soutra, Humbie, the ford and Carberry (62 miles). The fitness-plus group rode out via Penicuik, West Linton and Blyth Bridge, back to Elsrickle and the Big Red Barn, then home via Rommano Bridge, the Lyne Valley and Shiplaw (70 miles).


Wednesday 16th – mid-week intermediate ride up the cycle path to Roslin, via Roslin Glen, Rosslynlea, Rosebery and Temple to Carrington, then through Newbattle to Dalkeith Country Park (36 miles).
Sunday 20th – the inters went along the coast to Aberlady, then via Kingston and Whitekirk to Tynninghame for coffee, back via Papple, Morham, West Saltoun and Cousland (56 miles). The inters-plus group went through Pencaitland, round the back of Gifford to Garvald, through Stenton and the Biel estate to Tyninghame, back by Binning wood, N Berwick and Aberlady (58 miles). The fitness group went up Carberry then through Loanhead, Temple and Crichton to Humbie, back by Gifford and Haddington (62 miles). A small fitness-plus group rode up Carberry, through Humbie and Carfraemill to Westruther, then over towards Duns, back over the moor via Longformacus to Gifford and Tranent (79 miles).

Wednesday 23rd – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Pencaitland, back by Samuelston and Macmerry (43 miles).
Sunday 27th – the intermediate-plus group rode up Carberry and Edgehead, over the Granites and over Gilston to Soutra, back by Humbie and Cousland (50 miles). The inters went up Carberry and Edgehead, via Borthwick and Blegbie to Humbie, then back by the ford and Ormiston (47 miles). The fitness group went to West Barns via East Linton, back through Papple, Gifford, Humbie and Cousland (64 miles). The fitness-plusers went through Tranent and Gifford to the Rig, over Crystal Rig to Spott, back by West Barnes, Tyninghame and Athelstaneford (66 miles).

Wednesday 30th – mid-week intermediate ride to Amisfield Walled Garden via Longniddry and Gladsmuir, back through Macmerry, Tranent and Cockenzie (44 miles).

Thursday 1st – evening training ride up Carberry, through East Saltoun, Bolton and Longniddry.
Sunday 4th – the fitness group went up Carberry and via Humbie, Gifford and Spott to Dunbar, back round by Whitekirk, N Berwick, Fenton Barns and Aberlady (72 miles). The intermediates also started up Carberry, then via Haddington and Traprain Law to East Linton for coffee, back via Binning Wood, Kingston and Aberlady (50 miles).
Thursday 8th – evening training ride to Heriot (44 miles).
Sunday 11th – the intermediate group started along the coast then up Bangly Brae and through Athelstaneford to Tyninghame, back round Traprain Law, Morham, Pencaitland and Carberry (56 miles). The inter-plus group rode up Carberry, then via Crichton, the Old Stage Road and Stow to Lauder, back by Oxton, Fala Dam and Cousland (56 miles). Wednesday 14th – mid-week intermediate ride went through East Saltoun and Longyester to Gifford, back via Samuelston and Cockenzie (41 miles).
Thursday 15th – evening training ride to Haddington, the Yak, and back along the coast (37 miles).
Sunday 18th – the fitness ride went up Carberry, then via Pathhead, Crichton, Heriot and Thornylee to Innerleithen back over the Granites, Newbattle and Whitecraig (68 miles). The fitness-plus group went through Bonnyrigg, Leadburn, and Blythe Bridge for coffee in Biggar; back via Quathquan, Carnwath and the Lang Whang (74 miles). The inters-plus group went through Dalkeith, Leadburn and Romannobridge to Peebles, back by Gladhouse and Carrington (62 miles). The intermediates went up Carberry to Pathhead, then to Heriot and via the coach road to Stow, over the hill to Lauder; back by Newbigging, the A68 and Humbie (57 miles).
Wednesday 21st – mid-week intermediate ride along the Esk Cyclepath then the Dalkeith and Pencaitland railway paths, backroads to Longyester and Gifford, back via Haddington and the Longniddry Railway path (50 miles).
Thursday 22nd – evening training ride to Gifford and back.
Sunday 25th – the inters went up Redstone rig via Samuelston and Danskine; down to Haddington for coffee, and home via Macmerry (55 miles). The fitness group also went up the Rig via East Saltoun and Longyester, down to Garvald, Gifford for coffee, then home via Samuelston, Pencaitland and Fa’side (59 miles). The fitness-plus riders went out by Haddington, Spott, Stottencleugh and Monynut to Abbey St Bathans; back down Redstone Rig (78 miles). The inters-plus went up the Granites, over to Heriot then to Soutra, back by Fala and Carberry (49 miles).
Wednesday 28th – mid-week intermediate ride to Roslin, Penicuik, past Penicuik House to Carlops and back over Harlaw Moor with a coffee stop in Penicuik.
Thursday 29th – evening training ride to Edgehead, Gorebridge, Temple and back via Dalkeith (30 miles).

Sunday 1st – the fitness group went along the coast to North Berwick and Dunbar, then back through Spott, Gifford, Humbie and Cousland (65 miles). The fitness-plus group also started on the coast road to North Berwick, then went inland through Haddington and Gifford to Humbie, then back via Heriot, the Granites, Gorebridge and Dalkeith (78 miles). The inters-plus rode up through Tranent and the Saltouns to Gifford, then via Haddington and East Linton to Tyninghame, back through Auldhame and Aberlady (54 miles). The intermediates did a similar route, via Carberry, West Saltoun and Haddington to Tyninghame, back by Binning Wood, Kingston and Aberlady (52 miles).
Wednesday 4th – mid-week intermediate ride through Tranent, East Linton, Haddington and Hales Castle to East Linton; back by Markle, Athelstaneford, Haddington and Tranent (41 miles).

Thursday 5th – evening training ride with just two riders going to Humbie, back through Fala and Edgehead (34 miles).
Sunday 8th – the intermediates went via Roslin Glen, Roseberry Reservoir and Tynehead to the House of Soutra; back through Humbie (48 miles). The inter-plus group went through Tranent, Pencaitland and East Saltoun, a loop around Humbie, then via Bolton and Haddington to the Merryhatton cafe, back by Whitelkirk, North Berwick and Aberlady (65 miles). The fitness ride started up Carberry then through Crichton to Heriot, but after various punctures and mechanical problems, some riders turned back over the Granites; the rest rode on to Innerleithen, Peebles and Gladhouse (68 miles). A small fitness-plus group went to Lauder via Mayfield, Crichton and Stow; back through Oxton, the A68, Humbie and Longniddry (70 miles).

Wednesday 11th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Haddington and Moreham, back through Samuelston, Macmerry and Tranent (42 miles).
Thursday 12th – evening training ride through Cousland, W Saltoun, Samuelston and Longniddry (36 miles).
Sunday 15th – the intermediate-plus group went to West Linton via the Shawfair/Roslin cycle path, Penicuik and the moor road, then over the Meldons to the Scots Pine for coffee; back by Gladhouse and Carberry (61 miles). The fitness group did something similar the other way around: Elphinstone, Temple, the Meldons, West Linton and Penicuik (70 miles). The fitness-plusses went to Dawyck via Lasswade, Mount Lothian, Waterheads, Eddleston and the Meldons; then over Dreva to Skirling, and back through West Linton and Penicuik (74 miles). The intermediates rode to Humbie via Aberlady, Haddington and Gifford; back through Fala Dam, Ormiston and the Pencaitland railway path (48 miles).
Wednesday 18th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via the Mayfield Alps, Pathhead, Peaston and the Saltouns; back via Samuelston and Macmerry (46 miles).

Thursday 19th – evening training ride up Fa’side to East Saltoun, then Bolton, Samuelston, Longniddry (36 miles).
Sunday 22nd – the fitness ride went up the Shawfair cycle path, then via Carrington, Gladhouse and Eddleston to Peebles, along the Tweed by Cardrona and Traquair to Innerleithen, then back by the Granites, Borthwick and Carberry (68 miles). The fitness-plus group went through Cousland, back roads to Danskine, up the Rig, back down to Garvald, a cafe stop at Tyninghame then home via East Fortune, Athelstaneford, the Yak and Longniddry (75 miles).

Wednesday 25th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Haddington, back by Samuelston and Macmerry (43 miles).
Thursday 26th – evening training ride to Pencaitland, East Saltoun, Haddington and the Yak (39 miles).
Sunday 29th – a combined fitness/fitness-plus ride went through Mayfield, Crichton and Samuelton to East Linton, back by Whitelkirk, Drem and Tranent (66 miles). The intermediate-plus group went to Garvald via Tranent and Haddington, up onto the Lammermuirs, down the Rig to Gifford and home through East Saltoun, Pencaitland and Fa’side (55 miles). The inters rode through Tranent and Pencaitland to Gifford, via Garvald and Papple to Tyninghame, back by Athelstaneford, Bangly Brae and Cockenzie (52 miles).

Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th – the Portovelo weekender 2021 took place in Pitlochry. A few people rode up on Friday, over the Forth Bridge, Kinross, Perth and Dunkeld (82 miles). On Saturday, intermediate and inters-plus riders rode west by Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch to a cafe stop at Rannoch station, along the south of Loch Rannoch and down to Kenmore for a late lunch, then back to Pitlochry via Aberfeldy and Logierait; a few riders extended that with a loop by Edradour and Moulin, then out and back to near Killiecrankie (90/101 miles). The fitness/fitness-plus group rode along the south of Loch Tummel, south to Glen Lyon, via Bridge of Balgie and round Loch Tay via Killin and then back through Aberfeldy, with some adding a loop south via Glen Quaich (90/103 miles). On the Sunday, both groups rode east from Pitlochry up by Carn Dubh to Kirkmichael; the fitness/fitness-plus group did a loop via Kirkton of Glenisla to Alyth, while the inters/inter-plus group went more directly to Blairgowrie; both then rode west to Dunkeld and back up to Pitlochry (53/65 miles).
Sunday 5th – for those not on the weekender, an intermediate ride went along the coast road then inland at Luffness, diversion to Seacliff beach, then via North Berwick and Dirleton to Archerfield for coffee; back by Camptoun Hill and Bangly Brae (56 miles).
Wednesday 8th – mid-week intermediate ride to House of Soutra via Edgehead, Crichton and Heriot, back by Humbie and Carberry (41 miles).
Sunday 12th – the fitness group went to West Barns via Tranent, Pencaitland, Longyester, Stenton, Little Spott and Dunbar, back through Biel, Morham, Haddington, Bangly Brae and the railway crossing (68 miles). The fitness-plus group also went to West Barns, via the coast road, Kingston, North Berwick and Whitekirk, back through Stenton, Haddington and Humbie (73 miles). The intermediate-plus group went up Redstone Rig via Haddington, back down to Garvald for a cafe stop in Gifford, back through Haddington and Longniddry (53 miles). The intermediate group went to Innerleithen via Bonnyrigg and Temple, back through Edgehead and Carberry (62 miles). In the afternoon, a small group went bramble-picking on the River Esk path.

Wednesday 15th – mid-week intermediate ride to Merryhatton via Carberry, Samuelston, Nunraw and East Linton; back via Athelstaneford, Macmerry, Tranent (46 miles).
Sunday 19th – the intermediate-plus group rode up the Smeaton farm road then via D’Arcy, Ford and Crichton to the A7, over the Gilston road to the Soutra cafe, back by Humbie and Haddington. The fitness-plus group rode out via Humbie to Lauder then over to Buckholm, followed by a gravel short-cut to Clovenfords, along the south of the Tweed to Innerleithen, then back by the Granites and Heriot (76 miles). The inters took a winding route to Humbie via West Saltoun and Blegbie, then over to Gladhouse and back through Carrington and Dalkeith (55 miles). The fitness group rode round the Pentlands – down the Lang Whang from Balerno to Carnwath, then via Dunsyre to West Linton, back through Penicuik and Loanhead (70 miles).
Wednesday 22nd – mid-week intermediate ride to Haddington by a round-about route involving Traprain Law and Morham, back through Pencaitland and Tranent (45 miles).
Sunday 26th – the inters group went up the Granites, then via Heriot to the House of Soutra; back via Humbie, Pathhead and Edgehead (55 miles). The inters-plus group went to Lauder via Cousland, Fala, Carfrae and Thirlestane; then over to Stow, up the coach road and back through Crichton and Edgehead (58 miles). The fitness group rode went to Broughton via Dalkeith, Carrington, the Meldons and Dreva; back by Blyth Bridge, West Linton and Bonnyrigg (72 miles). The fitness-plus group rode through Crichton to Stow, then over by Langshaws and Gattonside to Melrose for coffee; across to Leaderfoot and back through Earlston, Lauder, Soutra and Humbie (75 miles).
Wednesday 29th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Samuelston and Longyester, back by East Saltoun and Tranent (48 miles).

Sunday 3rd – the fitness group rode down to Peebles via Sheriffhall, Leadburn and the Lyne Valley, then through Cardrona to Innerleithen and back over the Granites (75 miles). The inters went through E Saltoun, Danskine, Garvald and Pitcox to Haddington for coffee; back via Macmerry and Tranent (52 miles). The fitness-plus group rode down the Lang Whang then turned right to Ford, Fauldhouse and Bathgate; back through Kirkliston and Newhaven (72 miles). The inters-plus groups went up the Granites, over to Heriot, over by Gilston to Soutra and back by East Saltoun and Pencaitland (54 miles).
Wednesday 6th – mid-week intermediate ride to Tyninghame via the Balfour monument and the Biel estate, back by Markle and Bangly Brae (50 miles).
Sunday 10th – the inters-plus group rode out through Elphinstone and Pencaitland to Stenton, then back to Gifford for coffee, and home via the Saltouns (59 miles). The intermediates went south through Penicuik, Eddleston and Peebles to Innerleithen, back over the Granites and home through Dalkeith (69 miles). The fitness group rode to Garvald, up onto the moors, over Crystal Rig to Spott, down to Dunbar and back through Haddington (73 miles). The fitness-plus group rode down to Duns via Garvald, back through Longformacus and Gifford (76 miles).
Wednesday 13th – mid-week intermediate ride along the coast to Aberlady, up to Drem, Athelstaneford, East Linton, Haddington and back via Macmerry and Tranent (43 miles).
Sunday 17th – a poor forecast reduced numbers, so the intermediates and intermediate-plus groups combined for a ride to Gifford via Cousland, the ford road and Longyester; back past Garvald and through Morham and Haddington (57 miles). A small fitness group rode through Lasswade, Penicuik, Auchencorth Moss and the Lyne Valley to Peebles, then back through Carrington and Dalkeith Country Park (64 miles). The fitness-plus group went south over the Meldons to Peebles, via Traquair to Innerleithen, and back over the Granites (73 miles).
Wednesday 20th – mid-week intermediate ride up Carberry and via Fala and Humbie to Haddington, back by Longniddry (47 miles).
Saturday 23rd – the first-ever Portovelo gravel ride included a gravel section from Whitecraig, the Pencaitland Railway Walk, the railway path from Haddington to Longniddry and a stop at the Musselburgh BMX track (37 miles).
Sunday 24th – the intermediate group rode to Tyninghame via Athelstaneford; back through the Biel estate, Morham and Samuelston (53 miles). The fitness group also went to Tyninghame via Tranent, Humbie, Gifford and Pitcox; back through Haddington and Aberlady (69 miles). The inters-plus group went to West Linton via Edgehead, Middleton and Gladhouse, home by Penicuik and Loanhead (64 miles). The fitness-plus group rode to Dawyck via Roslin Glen, Leadburn and Dreva, back by the Meldons and Gladhouse (67 miles).
Wednesday 27th – mid-week intermediate ride to Penicuik via Roslin, a loop to Carlops and back to Penicuik for coffee; home via the cycle path to Shawfair (40 miles).
Sunday 31st – on a very wet day, the intermediate-plus group rode to Humbie via Dalkeith country park, Mayfield, Crichton and the ford road; back by the Saltouns and Fa’side (40 miles). The fitness group rode up Carberry and Edgehead, then via Crichton, Fala and Humbie to Gifford, back through Haddington and Port Seton (50 miles). The intermediates rode along the coast to Aberlady, via Haddington and Luggate to Smeaton for the cafe stop, back via Athelstaneford, Macmerry and Tranent (46 miles). The fitness-plus group went up the Granites, then over to the House of Soutra for coffee, back by Humbie (2nd cafe stop) (48 miles).

Sunday 7th – the fitness group rode west to Linlithgow via Balerno, Kirknewton, Dechmont and Torphichen, back through South Queensferry and the Dalmeny estate (61 miles). The inters-plus group also went west through Granton and Kirkliston to Kingscavil, and back by a similar route (46 miles). The fitness-plus group went south past Gladhouse reservoir, over the Meldons, round Cademuir hill to Peebles, along to Innerleithen and back over the Granites (75 miles). The intermediates went to Gladhouse, then up the Granites, left to Heriot, over to Soutra and back through Humbie (56 miles).
Wednesday 10th – mid-week intermediate ride to Tyninghame via Tranent, Haddington and East Linton, back through the Biel Estate, Samuelston and Longniddry (50 miles).
Sunday 14th – the intermediate-plus group rode to West Linton via Dalkeith country park, Carrington and the Meldons, back by the moor road, Rosslynlea and the bike-path to Shawfair (60 miles). The fitness-plus group went up Redstone Riggings, then from Garvald to West Barns and direct back through Athelstaneford (65 miles). The intermediates rode south through Roslin, then past Rosebery reservoir to Middleton and Humbie, back by Carberry (48 miles). The fitness group went to Lauder via Eskbank, Temple and Stow, back by Carfraemill and Humbie (63 miles).

The intermediate-plus group also went to Linlithgow via Corstorphine, Ratho, East Calder and Dechmont, returning by Hopetoun House and Dalmeny (57 miles). The fitness group rode to North Berwick via minor roads south of Gifford (65 miles). The intermediate group went east to East Linton via Fa’side, Longyester and Danskine, back through Athelstaneford and Tranent (55 miles).
Wednesday 24th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via the Saltouns and Leehouses, back by Samuelston and Macmerry (38 miles).
Sunday 28th – on a very cold and snowy day, only two groups ventured out. A combined inters/inters-plus group rode along the coast to North Berwick and back (40 miles). A combined fitness/fitness-plus group rode round the Pentlands: out through Balerno, down the Lang Whang to Carnwath, via Dunsyre to West Linton, back on the A702 to Penicuik, then home via Gilmerton (65 miles).

Sunday 5th – the inters-plus group rode to the Strawberry Barn via Fenton Barns, North Berwick and Whitekirk, back by East Linton, Markle and Seaton Mains (57 miles). The fitness group went over the Granites, left to Heriot and then over Soutra Aisle; back via Humbie, Ormiston and Tranent (51 miles). The fitness-plus group went via Sheriffhall and Leadburn to the Lyne Valley, over the Meldons to Eddleston, and back through Carrington and Borthwick (63 miles). The intermediates went through Pencaitland, Bolton and East Linton to Tyninghame, back by Fenton Barns, Aberlady and the coast road (52 miles).
Wednesday 8th – mid-week intermediate ride to Gifford via Bangley Brae and Haddington, back through Samuelston and Tranent (36 miles).
Sunday 12th – with everyone who had been at the Christmas night-out staying away (following a positive Covid test), numbers were much reduced. Two inters-plus riders rode up the Granites, then over to Soutra and back down Carberry (49 miles). A small intermediate group went to Gifford via the Saltouns, back by Bolton and Samuelston (31 miles). And an equally small fitness/fitness-plus group rode via Gladhouse and the Meldons to East Linton, back through Penicuik (61 miles).
Wednesday 15th – mid-week intermediate ride to Tyninghame via Haddington, then back via Markle, Athelstaneford and Tranent (44 miles).
Saturday 18th – gravel ride in East Lothian including the Carberry estate, Butterdean Wood and the railway path from Haddington to Longniddry (39 miles).
Sunday 19th – reduced numbers again (a combination of weather and Covid), so a combined fitness/inters+ group rode round the coast to North Berwick then via Whitelkirk to Tyninghame and back through Biel, Morham and Samuelston (57 miles). A small fitness+ group rode via Humbie and Soutra to Lauder, then over to Stow and back by Heriot and Pathhead (55 miles). The intermediate group’s ride was cut short by an accident early on that caused one rider to abandon; it started along the coast, then went inland to Haddington and Gifford, direct back through Tranent (37 miles).
Wednesday 22nd – mid-week intermediate ride through Samuelston and round by Traprain Law to Haddington, direct back through Macmerry and Tranent (42 miles).
Sunday 26th – Boxing Day intermediate ride through Tranent and Samuelston, a loop around Traprain Law, then back through Boton; the group then split with a faster group returning via Pencaitland and Tranent, and a slower group by the Saltouns and Carberry (41/46 miles).
Wednesday 29th – mid-week intermediate ride in the rain to Bangly Brae and back along the coast road (26 miles).
