Welcome to the website of Portovelo, a cycling club based in the Portobello area of Edinburgh

Sunday rides
We have four groups leaving the bandstand at the east end of the Prom at 8 am (March – November) or 9 am (December – February) every Sunday, year-round.

All rides return by lunchtime, usually around 1 pm. Routes vary and mostly stick to quieter roads; there is always a cafe stop. Winter rides (December to February) are shorter and a bit slower. See the FAQ page for more information on the groups.

Intermediate
Rides of 50 or so miles at a moving average of around 14-15 mph.
No rider dropped

Intermediate+
Rides of 55 or so miles at a moving average of around 15-16 mph.
No rider dropped

Fitness
Rides of 60 or so miles at a moving average of around 16-17 mph. No rider dropped.

Fitness+
Rides of 70 or so miles at a moving average of around 18+ mph. Group may split.

Wednesday rides
Every Wednesday morning, there is a sociable ride at intermediate pace, leaving the bandstand at 9.00 am and getting back about 12.30 or so.

Gravel rides
Our “Porto-gravelo” rides leave from the bandstand ever second Saturday throughout the year. Like our road rides, routes are varied and there’s a cafe stop. The aim is to do around half the distance on off-road tracks and trails.

Challenge rides
Each year, we organise at least one longer “challenge” ride for each group (usually a 100 mile ride for the Fitness group, longer or shorter for the others); and there’s also our annual “weekender” (usually in mid-June) where we visit a new area and explore unfamiliar roads.

Evening rides
During the summer months, we usually organise weekly evening training rides at fitness pace, with distances of 35 to 40 miles.

Social evenings
We meet up on the second Thursday of every month, at 8 pm, in a local pub.  All are welcome, whether you’ve ridden with us before or not.

Other activities
We have also organised bike maintenance classes, track taster sessions, film nights and contributed to community events. During lockdown, we organised individual time-trials (on Strava segments) and Zwift indoor-training sessions.
