Welcome to the website of Porto-Velo, a cycling club based in the Portobello area of Edinburgh

Portovelo Sunday rides resumed on 27th September, and operate in compliance with Scottish Cycling and Cycling UK guidance.

Update 9 October: Portovelo rides are suspended for the remainder of October in line with updated Scottish Cycling guidance and Scottish Government restrictions in the Lothian area.

See below for the results of a recent member survey:

Sunday rides
We have three groups leaving the bandstand at the east end of the Prom at 8 am (March – November) or 9 am (December – February) every Sunday, year-round.

All rides will return by lunchtime, usually around 1pm. Routes vary and mostly stick to quieter roads; there is always a cafe stop. Winter rides (December to February) are shorter and a bit slower. See the FAQ page for more information on the groups.

Rides of 50 or so miles at a moving average of around 14 mph.
No rider dropped.

Rides of 60 or so miles at a moving average of around 16 mph. No rider dropped.

Rides of 70 or so miles at a moving average of around 18 mph. Group may split.

Challenge Rides
Each year, we organise at least one longer “century” ride for each group (usually a 100 mile ride for the fitness+, 100Km for the Inters); and there’s also our annual “weekender” where we visit a new area and explore unfamiliar roads.

Other Rides
During the summer months, we organise weekday evening training rides on Thursday evenings, leaving from the Bandstand with distances of 35 to 40 miles. There are also occasional family/leisure rides, aimed primarily at parents and children, on quiet roads or off-road tracks.

Social evenings
Pre-lockdown, we met up on the last Wednesday of every month, at 8.30 pm, in a local pub.  During lockdown, some Zoom socials were organised. Check the Calendar page for information of any forthcoming social evenings.

Other activities
We have also organised bike maintenance classes, track taster sessions, film nights and contributed to community events. During lockdown, we organised individual time-trials (on Strava segments) and Zwift indoor-training sessions.
